Shifting shades of normal
Crayscale is a series of plaster anatomical figures ranging in tone from pristine white to deep black. This gradient in colour is created by adding Indian ink to the plaster mixture. As more ink is added, the casts emerge from their moulds increasingly distorted. These variations in colour and form suggest a kind of pathology within the material itself.
The moulds are taken from plastic anatomical models, many of them children's toys. The process began as a form of playful learning. Before long, collecting, experimenting and arranging became an almost meditative repetition, a form of reflection. How far can I go? When does darkness become too dark? At what point is something still recognisable as bodily
